On Modern Loneliness

Updated: Apr 12, 2019

It is hypocritical to think that people now are more egotistical than they were before. With globalization comes interconnectedness between peoples and cultures. With mobile devices in hand, you can instantly be informed about worldwide news such as technological advancement, natural disasters, and social inequalities. With increased input of information, humans are becoming good at comparing themselves with others in a broader context and having enhanced capabilities of empathy. Thus, we are by no means more egoistic than before. Moreover, our circle of interactions has broadened thanks to instant accessibility of information, so we are no lonelier than other predecessors.

Everything needs moderation. Excessive use of social media does make people feel lonely and depressed just as excessive eating would lead to diseases such as diabetes. It is quite amusing to see that most people are always on their phone: for instance, when I was walking out of the restroom, the student in front of me was instantly back on phone. In an age of big data, we are surrounded by information, constantly, and we sometimes detach ourselves from the reality.

With increasingly advanced technology, humans try to build Artificial Intelligence in an effort to humanize machines, while most of them are becoming more and more machine. How pitiful!
